Opening Thoughts

Sisters! Recently, my friends keep asking me: "Where's the most reliable place to buy skincare and makeup?" "Online shopping is cheaper but risky, while counter shopping is expensive but feels safer - how should I choose?" Indeed, there are so many beauty shopping channels now, from traditional department store counters to various major e-commerce platforms, plus emerging channels popping up constantly - the choices are overwhelming.

As someone who has been in the beauty circle for nearly ten years, I've encountered my share of pitfalls and gained quite a bit of experience. Today, I'll help break down the characteristics of these shopping channels to help you find the shopping method that suits you best. Don't rush - grab a bubble tea, and let's chat about it~

Online Platforms

Speaking of online shopping, we must mention Amazon, the e-commerce giant. You might not know that Amazon's beauty and personal care category has become one of the world's largest beauty retail channels. Just looking at last year's data, Amazon generated over $20 billion in sales from beauty and personal care alone - that number is truly staggering!

On Amazon, you can find not only big brands like L'Oreal and Neutrogena but also discover some niche products with excellent quality. For instance, I recently discovered a niche Korean skincare brand there, and their hyaluronic acid serum is amazingly good! The ingredient list is clean, the texture is light and non-sticky, and the price is very reasonable.

However, sisters need to be vigilant when shopping on large e-commerce platforms. I stepped into a big pitfall last year when I bought a spoiled serum. After using it for just a few days, my face broke out in small pimples. Later, I realized I hadn't carefully checked the production date and bought a product that was about to expire. Since then, I've developed the habit of carefully checking product information before ordering and always choosing platform-operated or official brand stores.

Besides Amazon, domestic e-commerce platforms like Taobao and JD.com have also greatly improved their beauty categories. Especially during Singles' Day, the various promotions make it hard to stop shopping. But I must remind everyone to shop rationally and not let low prices cloud your judgment. I have several girlfriends who stock up on tons of skincare products every Singles' Day, only to have them expire before they can use them all, which is even more wasteful.

Many e-commerce platforms now offer live streaming sales, making shopping more interesting and intuitive. However, remember that not every product recommended by streamers will suit you. I suggest paying more attention to product ingredients and effects when watching live streams, rather than being carried away by the host's sales pitch.

Professional Channels

When it comes to professional beauty retailers, Sephora is definitely the leader in this field. Today's Sephora has evolved beyond a simple sales platform into a comprehensive beauty community. Through its membership system, consumers can not only enjoy various benefits but also participate in beauty classes, product trials, and other interesting activities.

I especially love Sephora's testing area, where you can experience products' texture and effects in person. I remember once being influenced by an incredibly popular foundation online and went to Sephora specifically to buy it. However, after trying it in the testing area, I discovered that although the foundation had rave reviews, it was completely unsuitable for my dry skin and looked very artificial when applied. Since then, I've understood one principle: no matter how popular a viral product is, you need to choose based on your actual needs.

Sephora's beauty advisors are also very professional and will recommend suitable products based on customers' skin types and needs. However, it's worth noting that beauty advisors also have sales targets to meet, so their advice should be taken as reference only, and the final decision should be based on your own judgment.

Besides Sephora, chain drugstores like Watsons and Mannings are also good choices. These stores generally offer more affordable products and frequently have promotions. I often go to Watsons to buy some basic skincare products like makeup remover and face masks, which offer really good value for money.

In recent years, some professional beauty multi-brand stores have also started to emerge. These stores usually gather some niche but quality brands and are great places to discover new products. I discovered an Australian skincare brand at a beauty multi-brand store, and their vitamin C serum is particularly gentle, perfect for sensitive skin.

Brand Direct Sales

In recent years, more and more brands have started to focus on direct sales channels, especially the development of online official stores. Taking YSL as an example, their online official store not only offers exclusive limited editions but also frequently holds exclusive events. During last year's Singles' Day, YSL's official store sales increased by 150% year-on-year, a truly surprising figure.

Brand direct sales have many advantages, first being the guarantee of authentic products, and second being access to brand-exclusive services. For example, many luxury brand official stores offer engraving services, allowing you to engrave your name or favorite text on products, which is really thoughtful personalization.

However, honestly, luxury brand prices aren't affordable for everyone. A YSL lipstick easily costs three to four hundred yuan, and a Chanel foundation can even cost over a thousand yuan. This is when some professional skincare brands become great alternatives. For instance, DRMTLGY, although not a luxury brand, produces very high-quality products. Their anti-aging product line is highly praised, and while not cheap, offers great value for money.

Now many brands are focusing on integrating online and offline experiences. You can try products in physical stores, then scan a code with your phone to order directly, and products will be delivered to your home. This shopping method maintains the advantages of offline experience while offering the convenience of online shopping, which is really great.

Speaking of brand direct sales, we can't forget duty-free shops as a special channel. Although international travel isn't very convenient now, domestic duty-free shops have developed quite well. Hainan duty-free shops are a good example, offering not only complete product categories but also much lower prices than counters. A girlfriend of mine recently went to Hainan and spent several tens of thousands just on cosmetics, saving quite a bit of money.

Skincare Solutions

When it comes to skincare, many sisters are particularly concerned about anti-aging. Actually, anti-aging isn't about using a single product but requires a complete care regimen.

First, basic protection is always the top priority. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 90% of skin aging is caused by sun exposure. So sunscreen is really important - I apply SPF50+ sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days. And sunscreen isn't just a one-time application; if you're outdoors, you need to reapply every two hours.

Second are the basic skincare steps. Cleansing, toning, serum, lotion, and cream - each step is important. Cleansing should be gentle but thorough, toner should be alcohol-free, serum should be chosen based on your skin type and skincare needs, and lotion and cream should be adjusted according to the season.

Many people might think more skincare steps are better, but that's not true. The most important thing about skincare is consistency. Rather than buying a pile of products that collect dust, it's better to choose a few products that truly suit you and use them consistently. My skincare routine is very simple - morning is face wash, toner, serum, lotion, sunscreen; evening is double cleansing, toner, serum, cream.

Speaking of serums, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and retinol are the three star anti-aging ingredients. Vitamin C can brighten skin tone and fade dark spots; hyaluronic acid can hydrate and lock in moisture; retinol is the gold standard for anti-aging. However, these ingredients are quite active, so you need to introduce them gradually and not use too many active ingredients at once to avoid irritating your skin.

Face masks are also an important part of skincare routines. But more isn't better - 2-3 times a week is enough. And you should choose mask types based on your current skin condition. Use hydrating masks when your skin is dehydrated, whitening masks when your skin is dull, oil-control masks when your skin is oily.

Advanced Care

For sisters wanting better skincare results, professional treatments are also a good choice. Current medical beauty technology is quite mature, from AHA peels to RF tightening, all can bring good results.

AHA peeling is an entry-level medical beauty treatment that can improve skin texture and fade acne marks and dark spots. However, note that after AHA peeling, you must pay attention to sun protection, otherwise, it's easy to get hyperpigmentation. Also, different concentrations of AHA should be chosen based on your skin's tolerance - it's recommended to start with low concentrations for first-timers.

RF tightening is a relatively gentle anti-aging treatment that stimulates collagen regeneration through thermal energy to achieve firming and lifting effects. However, results need to accumulate gradually, usually requiring 3-5 treatment sessions to see obvious effects.

There are some more advanced treatments like hyaluronic acid fillers and botox, which require more professional doctors to operate. I suggest everyone do thorough research before trying these treatments and choose legitimate medical institutions, don't go to small clinics just to save money. After all, our face is our front door - we can't be careless about it.

Besides medical beauty treatments, some home beauty devices are also quite good. For example, RF beauty devices and essence introducers, although their effects aren't as obvious as medical treatments, can show improvements with consistent use. However, note that these devices must be chosen from legitimate brands, and must be operated strictly according to instructions.

Daily life care is also important. Maintaining good sleep habits, drinking plenty of water, and moderate exercise are all foundations of skincare. I maintain drinking 2000ml of water daily, sleeping before 11 PM, and exercising three times a week. Although it seems ordinary, if you stick to it, your skin condition will keep getting better.

Closing Thoughts

Having read this far, do you have a new understanding of beauty shopping and skincare? Actually, choosing suitable shopping channels and skincare solutions is like customizing a beauty plan for yourself. Remember, the most expensive isn't necessarily the best - what suits you is the best.

Skincare and beauty are processes that require continuous learning and exploration. What we need to do isn't blindly follow trends, but understand our own needs and find products and methods that suit us. During this process, we might encounter pitfalls, but as long as we summarize experiences and lessons timely, we can keep getting better.

Everyone's skin type and skincare needs are different, so don't blindly believe in others' skincare solutions. Learn to observe your skin condition and adjust skincare steps and products according to your actual situation. Skincare isn't something that can be achieved overnight - it requires patience and persistence.

Finally, I hope every beauty lover can find the most suitable shopping channels and skincare solutions, making your skin better and better, and becoming more confident!
